Mercedes-Benz W220 S-Class, S55 & S65 AMG

The W220 was lighter and sleeker than the car it replaced and brought Airmatic air suspension to the S-Class. It is the generation of the supercharged S55 AMG and, at the top, the twin-turbo V12 S600 and S65 AMG.

The S55 AMG and the V12 cars are the collectible W220s, with the S65 AMG the rarest of all. As with every modern S-Class, low miles and a complete service history are what separate a strong car from an ordinary one.

What a buyer checks first

  • Air suspension (and the hydraulic suspension on V12 cars) holding height and working.
  • COMAND, climate control and electrics.
  • Engine and transmission service history, especially on the turbo V12s.
  • Brakes and tires, which are costly on the AMG and V12 cars.
  • Records, both keys and books.

What makes one worth more

MilesLow, documented mileage is the single biggest driver of value. A car with half the miles of the average example routinely brings a large premium.
RecordsService history, window sticker, books, both keys and the original tools and first-aid kit. Paperwork turns a claim into proof.
OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified, in its factory colors. Period-correct is good; modified usually costs money.
Colors and optionsRarer factory colors and desirable options (sport packages, AMG, the hardtop on an SL) set one car apart from the next.
ConditionRust-free underneath, interior without cracks or tears, everything working. Deferred maintenance shows up fast in a buyer's inspection.
