Mercedes-Benz W126 S-Class
The W126 S-Class set the template for the modern luxury sedan and stayed in production for more than a decade. In the US it was sold as sedans from the 300SD diesel to the 560SEL, and as the SEC coupe.
The 560SEC coupe is the most collectible W126, followed by the 560SEL and low-mile 420SELs. These cars were built to cover huge distances, so a genuine low-mile, well-documented example is rare and wanted.
The models
- 300SD / 300SDL
- The turbodiesel sedans.
- 380SEL / 380SEC
- Early 3.8-liter V8 cars; check the timing chain has been upgraded.
- 420SEL
- The 4.2-liter V8 sedan, 1986–1991.
- 560SEL / 560SEC
- The 5.6-liter V8 flagships; the SEC coupe is the most collectible W126.
What a buyer checks first
- Timing chain and guides on the V8s, especially the early 380 engine.
- Self-leveling rear suspension, where fitted, and the vacuum-operated central locking.
- Climate control and the dashboard and instrument cluster working.
- Rust at the jacking points, rear wheel arches and under the trim.
- Service records, books and both keys.
What makes one worth more
MilesLow, documented mileage is the single biggest driver of value. A car with half the miles of the average example routinely brings a large premium.
RecordsService history, window sticker, books, both keys and the original tools and first-aid kit. Paperwork turns a claim into proof.
OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified, in its factory colors. Period-correct is good; modified usually costs money.
Colors and optionsRarer factory colors and desirable options (sport packages, AMG, the hardtop on an SL) set one car apart from the next.
ConditionRust-free underneath, interior without cracks or tears, everything working. Deferred maintenance shows up fast in a buyer's inspection.
