Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class

Many enthusiasts consider the W124 the best-built Mercedes-Benz of all. It came as a sedan, coupe, wagon and four-seat cabriolet, and it gained the E-Class name in 1994.

The 500E (renamed E500) is the icon of the range: a V8 sedan whose assembly involved Porsche in Zuffenhausen, and today one of the most collectible modern Mercedes-Benz sedans. The E320 Cabriolet, 300CE coupe and the wagons are increasingly wanted as well, above all with low miles and records.

What a buyer checks first

  • Engine wiring harness on 1992–1995 cars, which used insulation that breaks down with age.
  • Head gasket seepage on the six-cylinder engines.
  • Self-leveling rear suspension on wagons, and the top hydraulics on Cabriolets.
  • Rust at the jacking points, wheel arches and under the trim.
  • Records, both keys, books and original paint.

What makes one worth more

MilesLow, documented mileage is the single biggest driver of value. A car with half the miles of the average example routinely brings a large premium.
RecordsService history, window sticker, books, both keys and the original tools and first-aid kit. Paperwork turns a claim into proof.
OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified, in its factory colors. Period-correct is good; modified usually costs money.
Colors and optionsRarer factory colors and desirable options (sport packages, AMG, the hardtop on an SL) set one car apart from the next.
ConditionRust-free underneath, interior without cracks or tears, everything working. Deferred maintenance shows up fast in a buyer's inspection.
