A 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, built for SCCA STL-class racing, sold on Bring a Trailer on September 22, 2026. Here’s why a race-prepped NB brought four times what a nice street car does.

This car started life as an ordinary 2002 Miata. The owner bought it in 2024 and had it built into a race car at Flatout Motorsports in Mendon, Massachusetts, for SCCA STL competition. It went on to run events along the east coast, including a class win at Watkins Glen in 2024. Lime green with a black hardtop, APR carbon-fiber wing, aluminum splitter, Enkei 15-inch wheels on Hoosiers.

What makes a car like this worth real money isn’t the paint. It’s the parts list and the hours behind it: a blueprinted 1.8-liter with Wiseco pistons, Pauter rods and Megacycle cams, rebuilt in 2026 at Angry Sheep Motorsports in Winchester, Virginia, and not raced since. JRi four-way adjustable coilovers, a Torsen differential, a roll cage, a FireSense fire-suppression system, a CoolShirt system, AiM dash and SmartyCam. Two extra sets of wheels and tires went with it.

Why we set a reserve

Race cars are a narrow market. The right buyer knows exactly what an STL build costs to replicate, but there are fewer of those buyers on any given week than there are for a clean street car. A reserve protected the owner’s investment in the build and the fresh engine while the auction found them.

The listing had to make the case on its own, so we put everything in front of bidders: 115 photographs, the complete build list, and the history as it is. That included the hard part. The Carfax shows an October 2021 accident with a total-loss declaration and a salvage title issued in 2022, before the car was built, and it was sold on a bill of sale, which is common for dedicated race cars. There is no odometer. Paint chips were shown, not hidden. For a track car none of that is disqualifying, but bidders deserve to hear it from the seller, not discover it in the comments.

The auction

The listing drew 7,961 views, 594 watchers and 36 comments. Thirty-four bids came in, the reserve was met, and the auction closed on Tuesday, September 22 at 12:16 in the afternoon at $48,500.

What the number means

There is no clean comp for a car like this, which is exactly the point. The street NB Miatas that crossed Bring a Trailer in the same six weeks sold between $7,766 and $22,472. The best of them were low-mile Mazdaspeeds and a supercharged 10th Anniversary car, and none came within half of this number.

So the buyer wasn’t paying for a Miata. They were paying for a finished, sorted, winning race car with a fresh engine and spares, likely for less than it would cost to build one. That’s how race cars should be valued, and it’s why the listing spent its words on the build and the results rather than the badge.

If you own one

The cars that bring top money on Bring a Trailer share three things: honest condition, complete paperwork, and a listing that answers questions before they’re asked. If you have a race car, a track-day build you’ve been thinking about selling, we’ll tell you where it fits in the market and what we think it will bring. We’re a Bring a Trailer Local Partner and we handle everything from photography to the last comment.

A 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo coupe, six-speed, sold on Bring a Trailer on September 15, 2026. Here’s how it got there.

The car came to us the way most of our best consignments do: from someone who already knew what they had. A 2007 911 Turbo coupe with a six-speed manual and 9,000 miles on it. Basalt Black Metallic over Terracotta leather, Sport Chrono, 19-inch Turbo wheels, PASM, a sunroof. The owner had bought it on Bring a Trailer in July 2024, driven it sparingly, and decided it was time for it to go to the next caretaker.

The question wasn’t whether it would sell. It was how to sell it so the market told the truth about what it was worth.

Why we went no reserve

A 997.1 Turbo with a manual and single-digit-thousands of miles is not a common car. Bidders know that. When a car like this shows up with a reserve, the auction becomes a guessing game about the seller’s number instead of a conversation about the car. Going no reserve does two things: it tells every serious bidder the car is going home with someone on Tuesday, and it lets Bring a Trailer’s audience do what it does best, which is find the real price.

That only works if the car can stand up to scrutiny. This one could.

We put the car through the full pre-listing process. More than 220 photographs inside, outside and underneath. Four videos: an exterior walkaround, the engine and frunk, a cold start, and a point-of-view drive so bidders could hear the Mezger flat-six through the stock exhaust. Paint-meter readings on every panel, published in the gallery so nobody had to ask. And the paperwork: the original window sticker (delivered new to Tom Williams Porsche in Irondale, Alabama, at $130,115), owner’s manuals, service records, spare parts and a clean Carfax. The front lip had been replaced in December 2025 and an aftermarket exhaust had come off in 2020 in favor of the factory system; we said both up front. Nothing to discover, nothing to argue about.

The auction

Over seven days the listing drew 16,618 views, 1,908 watchers and 69 comments, and we answered every question the day it was asked. Sixteen bids came in. The auction closed on Tuesday, September 15 at 4:02 in the afternoon, and the car went to its sixth owner at $187,000: $57,000 more than it cost new in 2007.

What the number means

September was a busy month for 997 Turbos on Bring a Trailer, which makes this an unusually clean read on the market. An 8k-mile 2007 six-speed brought $210,000 on August 28. Jerry Seinfeld’s old 2007 brought $202,000 on September 11. On the other side, a 19k-mile 2007 six-speed with a reserve was bid to $146,000 and didn’t sell, and a 44k-mile car sold for $130,000 three days after ours.

So the market for these cars is real and it is layered: mileage and originality set the tier, and the tier sets the price. Our car landed exactly where a 9k-mile, well-documented, no-story example should: well above the 20k-mile cars, just under the two headline sales that had either fewer miles or a famous name attached. That’s not luck. That’s what happens when the presentation removes every reason to discount.

A 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on September 9, 2026. Here’s how a driver-quality FJ40 lands at the top of its bracket.

This FJ40 left the factory in Mustard Yellow and was repainted red with a white roof under an earlier owner, who also fitted the older-style side doors. The current owner bought it in 2020, and it had been through Bring a Trailer once before, in August 2021. It runs the 4.2-liter 2F inline-six with a four-speed manual and dual-range transfer case.

It’s a truck that has been used and kept up rather than restored. WARN locking hubs, Old Man Emu Nitrocharger shocks, front disc brakes, an ARB front bumper with a Smittybilt XRC winch, 15-inch American Racing wheels on BFGoodrich KM2s, a roll bar and black vinyl buckets. The Birfield joints, leaf springs and front wheel bearings were done in 2020, and the maintenance ran right up to an oil change in August 2026.

Why we went no reserve

FJ40s are one of the most active markets on Bring a Trailer. On almost any week there are two or three for sale, which means bidders have plenty of reference points and very little patience for a seller’s wishful number. For a driver-grade truck like this one, no reserve is the fastest route to a real price: it pulls in every bidder who has been watching and waiting.

No reserve only works when the listing is honest, so the 108-photo gallery showed the truck as it sits, and the description said what a buyer would want to know: the color change from Mustard Yellow, the aftermarket doors, the sagging perforated headliner, and a service history with dates. It came with records and a clean Pennsylvania title.

The auction

The auction drew 7,396 views, 853 watchers and 57 comments. Forty-two bids came in, and the truck closed on Wednesday, September 9 at 2:29 in the afternoon at $29,000.

What the number means

In the six weeks around our sale, unrestored and driver-quality FJ40s on Bring a Trailer mostly sold between $16,000 and $30,000, and several failed to sell with bids in the low-to-mid $20,000s. Two days after ours, another 1978 FJ40, a five-speed, also sold for exactly $29,000. That’s about as clean a confirmation as the market gives.

The trucks that went higher were a different kind of FJ40: a freshly sorted 1977 at $50,500, a 1972 at $38,500, and a 1FZ-FE-swapped 1967 at $83,000. Our truck landed at the top of the driver bracket, which is exactly where a well-kept, honestly presented, used FJ40 belongs.

A 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL sold on Bring a Trailer on August 27, 2026. Nearly fifty of them sold on BaT in the same eight weeks. Here’s why this one landed near the top.

The 560SL is the last and most powerful of the R107 roadsters, and 1989 was its final year. This one came from the original owner to the current owner’s relative in 2012, and it has covered only about 7,000 miles since, for 50,000 in total. Signal Red over beige leather, black soft top, color-matched hardtop, 15-inch Gullideckel wheels, the 5.5-liter V8 with a four-speed automatic and limited-slip differential.

Nothing about this car needed explaining. The power steering pump was replaced in 2021, the left inner seat hinge in 2024, the air-conditioning compressor in 2025, and the oil was changed right before the sale. The Carfax is clean.

Why we set a reserve

560SLs are everywhere on Bring a Trailer, and they sell across an enormous range. Over the eight weeks around our sale they went for anywhere from $6,350 to $136,000. In a market that wide, a reserve is how you keep a good car from being priced like an average one on a slow afternoon. We set it at a number that respected the miles and the condition, and let the listing do the rest.

The listing ran 99 photographs covering the car inside, out and underneath, and set out the ownership history, the equipment down to the Becker cassette stereo, and the dated service work. With a clean Carfax, service records and a Pennsylvania title, there was very little left for bidders to ask.

The auction

The auction drew 8,045 views, 821 watchers and 39 comments. Fifty-four bids came in, the reserve was met, and the car sold on Thursday, August 27 at 10:29 in the morning for $50,000.

What the number means

Forty-eight 560SLs sold on Bring a Trailer between August 1 and September 24, 2026. The median was $25,500. Only three brought more than ours, and all three were very low-mile cars: 4,000 miles at $136,000, 17,000 miles at $90,000, and 18,000 miles at $68,000. The same day ours sold, a 23-years-family-owned 1989 sold for $33,806.

That tells you where the money is in this market: condition and color first, miles second, and a clean, well-told story tying them together. At 50,000 miles this car sold for roughly double the median, and within a few thousand dollars of cars with far lower odometers. A 50k-mile 1989 two weeks later brought $48,500, which says the number was right.

A 1986 Ferrari Testarossa, the early single-mirror car, sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on August 11, 2026. It was the second-highest Testarossa sale on BaT all summer.

This is a monospecchio car: the early Testarossa with the single “flying mirror” mounted high on the driver’s A-pillar. It spent time in California, Illinois, Florida and Pennsylvania before it came to us in 2026 with 28,000 miles. Rosso Corsa over beige Connolly leather, gated five-speed, 16-inch Cromodora center-lock wheels. It was refinished in its factory color in 2013 by Karosserie Ltd. here in Wayne, and it earned Ferrari Classiche certification in 2021, with the red book to prove it.

The work that matters most on a Testarossa had just been done. In July 2026, Ferrari Philadelphia performed the timing belt service along with a water pump overhaul, fluids, belts, plugs, injectors, cam seals, battery, filters and lower radiator hoses. New Michelin Pilot Sports went on the same month.

Why we went no reserve

A fresh major service, Classiche certification and a desirable early specification are exactly what a Ferrari buyer wants to see before they bid without a safety net. With all three in place, no reserve told the market this car was going to sell on August 11, and it gave every serious Testarossa buyer a reason to show up.

We laid out the car in 103 photographs and put the paperwork up front: the Classiche red book with its November 1986 production date, a laminated window sticker, manufacturer’s literature, the tool roll and service records. We also said what a careful buyer would find anyway: a European-style exhaust fitted under previous ownership (with the removed factory exhaust and catalytic converters included), an aftermarket Kenwood stereo (original cassette unit included), and a missing corner of the right door pocket.

The auction

The listing drew 14,119 views, 1,316 watchers and 54 comments. Thirty-three bids came in, and the car sold on Tuesday, August 11 at 11:02 in the morning for $273,500.

What the number means

Eight Testarossas sold on Bring a Trailer between late June and late September. Only one brought more than ours: a single-family-owned, 3,700-mile 1990 at $303,500. Ours finished ahead of an 8,000-mile 1991 at $232,500, a 1988 at $215,000, a 22,000-mile 1987 at $202,222, and a European-market 1986 that sold for $251,000 in September.

That’s a strong result for a 28,000-mile car, and it reflects what the buyer was paying for: the early single-mirror specification, a freshly completed timing belt service from a Ferrari dealer, and Classiche certification that answers the originality question before it’s asked. For context, the later 512 TR ran from $171,000 for a race car to $620,000 for an 18,000-mile 1993 in the same window.

A 2011 BMW 1M sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on August 5, 2026. Modified cars usually take a haircut. This one didn’t.

The 1M was a one-year car, and only 983 were delivered to North America. This one is one of 435 North American cars in Valencia Orange Metallic, over black Boston leather with orange stitching, with the twin-turbo N54 six, six-speed manual and M differential. The window sticker shows it was delivered new to Devon Hill Motors, right here in Pennsylvania, at $49,935.

In November 2015 it got a Dinan package: Stage 3 engine software, a high-capacity oil cooler, a carbon-fiber cold-air intake, an upgraded intercooler and a free-flow exhaust. The maintenance since was thorough and dated: starter and a turbo in 2018, coils and plugs in 2024, brakes in 2024 and 2025, and the water pump and injectors in 2026. The removed factory parts came with the car.

Why we went no reserve

Modifications split the 1M market. Some buyers want a stock car and nothing else; others see a well-documented Dinan car as a known quantity. A reserve on a modified car tends to scare off the first group and doesn’t reassure the second. No reserve invites both, and lets the bidding settle the argument.

So we made sure bidders had every fact. Eighty-eight photos, the full Dinan parts list and install date, the window sticker, the owner’s manual, service records, a clean Carfax, and the flaws in plain language: touch-up paint on the bumpers, a scratch on the right quarter panel, a cracked underbody panel. Paint-protection film on the front end was noted too.

The auction

The auction drew 8,161 views, 1,036 watchers and 38 comments. Twenty-four bids came in, and the car sold on Wednesday, August 5 at 1:41 in the afternoon for $73,000, about $23,000 over its original sticker.

What the number means

Only a handful of 1Ms cross Bring a Trailer in a given month, which makes each result count. In the six weeks around ours, a 13,000-mile car sold for $80,000 in July and a 24,000-mile car for $71,500 in late June. Nine days after ours, a 2011 1M sold for $55,500, and two days after that a 12,000-mile car was bid to $74,000 and didn’t sell.

Put those together and ours holds up well: a modified, 35,000-mile car brought within $7,000 of a 13,000-mile example and more than a 24,000-mile car sold in June. The color helped, the paperwork helped, and no reserve made sure every buyer who wanted an orange 1M was in the room.

If you own one

The cars that bring top money on Bring a Trailer share three things: honest condition, complete paperwork, and a listing that answers questions before they’re asked. If you have a 1M, an M car, or any modern BMW you’ve been thinking about selling, we’ll tell you where it fits in the market and what we think it will bring. We’re a Bring a Trailer Local Partner and we handle everything from photography to the last comment.

A 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on July 15, 2026. It had been offered on BaT the previous December. Here’s what changed.

This 190SL was refurbished over eight years, from 2015 to 2023. It was refinished in White Gray in 2015, with rust repair on the left front fender and door jambs, and the cabin was reupholstered in red leather in 2018. The 1.9-liter four got Weber sidedraft carburetors in 2019, along with a resurfaced head, valves, seals and head gasket. The brakes were overhauled, the fuel tank repaired, the starter and motor mounts replaced. In September 2025 it got Bilstein shocks, new Vredestein tires and clutch linkage work.

It came with its removable hardtop, a black convertible top, 13-inch steel wheels with body-color hubcaps, spare parts, the removed Solex carburetors and air cleaners, and a stack of service records.

Why we went no reserve

The car had been offered on Bring a Trailer in December 2025. A second run at the same audience needs a reason for bidders to take it seriously, and the strongest reason there is: this time it was going to sell. No reserve reset the conversation from “what does the seller want” to “what is this car worth,” and midsummer is a far better time to sell an open two-seater than December.

The 89-photo listing was straightforward about what a buyer would find: fading on the convertible top fabric, missing rear glass in the hardtop, a weak reverse gate, and chips touched up in 2020. For a driver-quality 190SL those are known, fixable items, and saying so up front keeps the comments about the car rather than about the seller.

The auction

The auction drew 7,841 views, 891 watchers and 25 comments. Forty-one bids came in, and the car sold on Wednesday, July 15 at 10:27 in the morning for $84,000.

Result

What the number means

190SLs on Bring a Trailer this summer fell into two groups. Concours-level and long-term-owned cars brought $140,000 to $207,000. Most driver-quality cars like ours sold between $62,000 and $89,500: $77,000 on July 5, $85,600 on July 8, $62,000 on July 13, $75,000 and $89,500 in late June. Plenty of reserve cars in both groups didn’t sell, with high bids from $51,000 to $135,500.

Our car landed near the top of the driver band. The difference between $62,000 and $84,000 on a 190SL is almost always documentation: a buyer who can see eight years of dated work doesn’t have to price in the unknown.

An original-owner 1978 Cadillac Seville sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on June 29, 2026. It drew 82 comments along the way.

On September 22, 1978, this Seville was bought new from Henry Paul Cadillac in Wayne, Pennsylvania, for $13,984. The same owner still had it when it came to us, a few miles from where it was sold new, with 59,000 miles and the original invoice.

It’s a well-optioned car: Ruidoso Saddle Metallic with a Dark Camel Metallic vinyl roof, Antique Medium Saddle leather, power passenger seat, cruise control, opera lamps, wire wheel discs, fender-top lamp monitors and a limited-slip differential. The 5.7-liter V8 has the factory electronic port fuel injection. It came with the owner’s manual, the original invoice, service history and spare parts.

Why we went no reserve

Original-owner cars sell on their story, and a reserve gets in the way of a story. Buyers of a car like this aren’t comparing it to a spreadsheet of Sevilles; they’re deciding whether they want to be its second owner. No reserve lets that happen on its own terms.

The 114-photo listing told it straight. Paint touch-ups were called out panel by panel, along with curb rash on the wheel covers, an aftermarket antenna, a Clarion CD stereo in place of the original radio (included), a driver’s armrest secured with a screw, and an oil leak. The selling dealer’s service document was in the gallery. For a 48-year-old car with one owner, that level of candor is what makes bidders comfortable.

The auction

The auction drew 10,419 views, 836 watchers and 82 comments, which is a lot of conversation for a Seville. Twenty-eight bids came in, and the car sold on Monday, June 29 at 11:54 in the morning for $21,500.

What the number means

Sevilles don’t usually bring this kind of money. Of the ten that sold on Bring a Trailer between late May and late August, ours was the highest by a wide margin. The next best was a 9,000-mile 1999 SLS at $15,001. A 25,000-mile 1989 brought $9,400, a 1979 project $10,087, and the STS cars ran $3,700 to $9,300.

What the buyer paid for was the one thing no other Seville on the market could offer: a single owner, 59,000 miles and the original bill of sale from the dealership. That’s the premium for provenance, and it’s why we lead the listing with the story instead of the spec sheet.

A one-owner, 14,000-mile 2007 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on June 18, 2026. It was the top GT convertible sale on BaT that month.

This California Special was bought new by the owner who consigned it, and in 19 years it covered 14,000 miles. The window sticker shows it was delivered to Buhler Ford in Eatontown, New Jersey, at $37,255, with more than $5,000 in options: the California Special package, the five-speed automatic, the Comfort Group with heated seats, and the GT Appearance and Interior Upgrade packages. Performance White with Satin Black stripes, a black vinyl top, Black and Dove leather, 18-inch polished wheels and the Shaker 500 stereo.

The owner added a C&L intake and a Borla exhaust. The lower ball joints, oil and coolant were done in April 2026.

Why we went no reserve

There are a lot of S197 Mustangs on Bring a Trailer: more than fifty sold or bid in the month either side of this sale. Most of the attention goes to Shelbys, Bosses and Bullitts. A GT convertible needs every advantage to stand out in that crowd, and no reserve is one of the best: it tells bidders the car is selling and makes the auction worth watching.

The other advantage was paperwork and honesty. The 78-photo listing included paint-meter readings and close-ups of imperfections, the window sticker, the owner’s manual and accessories, and a clean Carfax. The build-date decal on the dash (August 18, 2006) was photographed too. For a one-owner car, it all adds up to a buyer who knows exactly what they’re getting.

The auction

The auction drew 7,256 views, 560 watchers and 45 comments. Thirty-nine bids came in, and the car sold on Thursday, June 18 at 10:26 in the morning for $32,500, within about $5,000 of what it cost new in 2007.

What the number means

A week after ours, a near twin, an original-owner, 16,000-mile 2007 GT California Special convertible, sold for $30,275. Other GT convertibles in the window sold for less: a 10,000-mile 2009 GT Premium at $25,000, 2010 GTs at $19,000, and original-owner 2006 GTs at $14,000 and $14,755.

So ours was the best non-Shelby GT convertible result in the window, ahead of the only true comparable. Mileage and single ownership set the bracket; the complete paperwork and the no-reserve format put it at the top.

A 2012 Jaguar XJL Portfolio sold at no reserve on Bring a Trailer on June 4, 2026. Big luxury sedans are a tough sell. Here’s what got this one over $20,000.

The X351 XJ is one of the best-looking big sedans of its era, and the long-wheelbase Portfolio was the well-equipped way to have one. This car is Crystal Blue Metallic over Ivory leather, with the Executive Package that adds rear business trays and an electric rear sunshade. The 5.0-liter V8 is paired with a ZF six-speed automatic. It spent most of its life registered in Texas, and the current owner bought it in November 2024 and added about 8,000 miles, for 42,000 in total.

The equipment list is long: panoramic roof, xenons, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, rearview camera and adaptive suspension. Pirelli P Zeros went on in November 2024, and the oil was changed in March 2026.

Why we went no reserve

Luxury sedans lose value fast, and buyers know it. Nobody bids on a twelve-year-old flagship sedan hoping to discover the seller’s reserve; they bid when they know it’s selling. No reserve is how you get a big sedan in front of the buyers who actually want one.

The 75-photo listing covered the imperfections as carefully as the options: paintwork on the right-rear door and quarter panel, curb marks on the wheels, an indentation in the driver’s door upholstery, and a technician’s 2024 recommendation for tie-rod and CV-joint service. With service records, a clean Carfax and a clean Pennsylvania title, there were no surprises left.

The auction

The auction drew 4,728 views, 515 watchers and 38 comments. Thirty-eight bids came in, and the car sold on Thursday, June 4 at 12:21 in the afternoon for $20,500.

What the number means

X351 XJs don’t come up often on Bring a Trailer. In the two months around our sale, a 2012 XJ Supersport sold for $18,000, a 2013 XJ AWD for $12,750, and back in April a supercharged 2012 XJL brought only $14,000. Newer cars, unsurprisingly, did better: a 24,000-mile 2016 XJL Supercharged at $29,500 and a 2019 XJR575 at $60,007.

Ours, a naturally aspirated 2012, outsold both the 2012 Supersport and the supercharged 2012 XJL. That’s color, condition and a complete, honest listing doing their job in a market that doesn’t reward much else.
