Mercedes-Benz R129 SL
The R129 SL was a technological showcase when it arrived: an automatic pop-up roll bar, a fully powered soft top and a removable hardtop, built to a standard that still feels solid today. It was sold as the 300SL, 500SL (later SL500), SL320 and the V12 600SL (later SL600).
The V12 cars and the AMG versions are the rarest and most sought after, but low-mile SL500s are the backbone of the market. Late cars from 1999 on carry the facelifted styling and updated interior many buyers prefer.
The models
- 300SL / SL320
- Six-cylinder cars, the lightest and simplest R129s.
- 500SL / SL500
- The V8 most buyers look for; the bulk of the R129s sold in the US.
- 600SL / SL600
- The 6.0-liter V12 flagship, with more standard equipment.
- AMG
- SL55, SL60 and the rare V12 SL70 and SL73: the most collectible R129s.
What a buyer checks first
- Soft-top hydraulics: leaks from the cylinders and lines are the classic R129 issue.
- Engine wiring harness on early-1990s cars, which used insulation that breaks down with age.
- Hardtop included, with its stand or cart if possible.
- Suspension, climate control and electrics all working.
- Service history, window sticker, both keys and books.
What makes one worth more
MilesLow, documented mileage is the single biggest driver of value. A car with half the miles of the average example routinely brings a large premium.
RecordsService history, window sticker, books, both keys and the original tools and first-aid kit. Paperwork turns a claim into proof.
OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified, in its factory colors. Period-correct is good; modified usually costs money.
Colors and optionsRarer factory colors and desirable options (sport packages, AMG, the hardtop on an SL) set one car apart from the next.
ConditionRust-free underneath, interior without cracks or tears, everything working. Deferred maintenance shows up fast in a buyer's inspection.
