Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class & CL

The W140 was one of the most over-engineered cars Mercedes-Benz ever built, with double-pane side glass, soft-close doors and, in the V12 cars, one of the great engines of the 1990s. It came as a sedan and as a coupe, sold as the SEC, then S-Class Coupe and finally CL.

The V12 S600 sedan and the CL600 and S600 coupes are the most collectible, with the V8 S500 and CL500 close behind. Low miles and a complete service history matter enormously: these are complex cars and buyers want proof they've been cared for.

The models

S320 / S350
Six-cylinder and diesel sedans.
S420 / S500
The V8 sedans; the S500 is the one most buyers look for.
S600
The 6.0-liter V12 flagship sedan.
S500 / S600 Coupe, CL500 / CL600
The two-door cars, the most collectible W140s.

What a buyer checks first

  • Engine wiring harness on early cars, which used insulation that breaks down with age.
  • Climate control, the double-pane windows and the soft-close doors working.
  • Suspension and, on V12 cars, a complete service history.
  • Electrics and the instrument cluster.
  • Records, both keys and books.

What makes one worth more

MilesLow, documented mileage is the single biggest driver of value. A car with half the miles of the average example routinely brings a large premium.
RecordsService history, window sticker, books, both keys and the original tools and first-aid kit. Paperwork turns a claim into proof.
OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified, in its factory colors. Period-correct is good; modified usually costs money.
Colors and optionsRarer factory colors and desirable options (sport packages, AMG, the hardtop on an SL) set one car apart from the next.
ConditionRust-free underneath, interior without cracks or tears, everything working. Deferred maintenance shows up fast in a buyer's inspection.
