Mercedes-Benz R107 SL

The R107 SL roadster ran for nearly two decades and became the definitive Mercedes-Benz convertible of its era. In the US it was sold as the 450SL, then the 380SL from 1981, and finally the 560SL from 1986 to 1989.

The 560SL is the one most collectors want: the strongest engine, the late-car refinements and, in the final years, the most complete specification. Clean 450SLs and 380SLs are wanted too, especially with low miles, original paint and the factory hardtop.

The models

450SL
1973–1980. The longest-running US version, 4.5-liter V8.
380SL
1981–1985. Lighter 3.8-liter V8; early cars were built with a single-row timing chain that many owners have since upgraded.
560SL
1986–1989. 5.6-liter V8, the most powerful and most collectible US R107.

What a buyer checks first

  • Rust in the floors, trunk floor, rocker panels and around the windshield frame.
  • Factory hardtop present and in good order; soft top and frame condition.
  • On 380SLs, whether the timing chain has been upgraded to the double-row type.
  • Fuel injection and climate control working as they should.
  • Service records, books, keys and the original tool kit.

What makes one worth more

MilesLow, documented mileage is the single biggest driver of value. A car with half the miles of the average example routinely brings a large premium.
RecordsService history, window sticker, books, both keys and the original tools and first-aid kit. Paperwork turns a claim into proof.
OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified, in its factory colors. Period-correct is good; modified usually costs money.
Colors and optionsRarer factory colors and desirable options (sport packages, AMG, the hardtop on an SL) set one car apart from the next.
ConditionRust-free underneath, interior without cracks or tears, everything working. Deferred maintenance shows up fast in a buyer's inspection.
