CL Imperial

Description

We are thrilled to present this highly original 1933 Chrysler Imperial CL dual Wind Shield Phaeton at Reimel Motorcars. This classic beauty is finished with a sleek black exterior and a warm brown leather interior.

In 1932, Chrysler made some updates to the CL Imperial. They stretched the chassis to 146 inches and revised the styling with a sleek and elegant design. The car features hydraulic brakes, adjustable seats, and hydraulic dampers, which were all carried over from previous models. Thanks to the advanced suspension geometry and powerful 8-cylinder engine, the CL Imperial is known for its exceptional driving performance during that time period.

Between 1932 and 1933, only 32 Imperial CL LeBaron-bodied dual W/S Phaetons were manufactured. Currently, only 20 of them are known to exist, which is a high survival rate for a classic car. This indicates how much people have loved these cars over the years. Out of the 20 cars, 19 have already been restored, leaving this one as the only unrestored Imperial CL LeBaron-bodied dual W/S Phaeton.

This Imperial CL has an intriguing history. It was first acquired by Manuel Quezon, the President of the Philippines, who used it while in the USA. The car was delivered in a beautiful burgundy color, which can still be seen under the hood. It was then passed on to Dr. Hans Luther, the German ambassador to the United States from 1933 to 1937. Later on, a carnival/thrill show promoter used it as an attention-grabber to announce their coming show as it went from town to town.

The car was spotted in 1950 by a man from North Carolina who had a similar model before the war. He convinced the promoter to sell him the car and had it painted black to match his previous car. The car remained in his possession until his passing in 2006, after which it passed to his son-in-law, Jon Wilson. The car went through two other owners, Jim Bradley and Mike Fairbairn, before we purchased it in 2012. The car was incredibly original, except for a repaint in 1950. It still had its original drive train, and the interior was 100% original. The original top was also in good condition, with only minor stains.

After our purchase, we sent the car to Automotive Restorations in NJ for a mechanical rebuild of its original components and to preserve its original interior. We chose Steve and his team because of their reputation for being sympathetic to all finishes.

This is a rare opportunity to own a true classic car recognized by the CCCA that can be proudly displayed or confidently driven on any tour.
