Porsche upgraded the flagship 911 in 1972 with its enlarged 2.4 liter engine up from 2.2 liters and a stronger 5-speed 915 gearbox. The oil tank was moved to the front of the rear passenger wheel to enhance handling. 1972 was the only year with an oil filler cap accessible from the passenger rear quarter panel. The pre-1974 911 is an icon of the motoring world.
